Engaged Citizens

2025

Yesterday I took proactive steps as an engaged citizen in my community.

I asked the manager of our local health food store to please visibly identify Canadian products.  He immediately, eagerly said he will, and how, including for another store that he also manages.  This will make it much easier for locals to support our Canadian economy.

I then asked the manager of one of the large supermarkets.  Although he didn’t agree to, he did teach me how to more clearly identify the origin of produce.  I was shocked to discover how much of our produce originates from the US!  Bulk carrots and mushrooms are Canadian, as is tofu.  I will explore labels and sources much more keenly now!

I’m noticing many more people taking time to read labels!  The current threat of Tariffs to Canadians is a powerful catalyst for us all, no matter where we live, to dedicate much more care to supporting and fostering our local economies.  As one client exclaimed, “Canada has done nothing to invite this!”

Shopping locally – plus reflecting on what we actually do and don’t need – will make a huge difference ecologically, too!  As we heard so many inspiring stories of, promptly when the pandemic began, nature restores herself quickly – when we aren’t in her way!  Dolphins in the Venice canals, birds flying visibly in Indian cities, turtles laying eggs on beaches deserted by tourists.  The wonderful list of nature’s regenerative power went on …

Reclaiming and ensuring the reins of our own collective wellbeing, I’m hearing many stories of Canadians canceling flights and travels to and via the US.

Although CONSUMER BOYCOTTS unfortunately do affect innocent producers, they are powerful and effective ways to say NO to bullying.

I have deep compassion for the innocent Americans who are caught in this political mire.

As Canadians – as any nation – now is the time to truly nurture our resilience.

Without violence, without hate, without intolerance, we must respect each other, care for our common good, and repair the torn and tearing fabric of our species.
